Biography

Irfan Ahmed Nazir is a doctoral candidate at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. His doctoral research examines the national identity debates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and their implications for school education. His other research interests include the state, society and foreign policy of the UAE, international relations and politics of the Middle East, and migration and diaspora issues focusing on the South Asia-Gulf corridor. He also holds a keen interest in the society and politics of contemporary Kerala.

Irfan was awarded the 2023 doctoral research grant by the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research, Ras Al Khaimah, and was among the first cohort of recipients of the travel grant awarded by the Humanities Research Fellowships for the Study of the Arab World, New York University Abu Dhabi. He was also awarded the Senior Research Fellowship by the University Grants Commission (India).

Irfan was born and raised in Dubai as a second-generation Indian expatriate and completed his school education in the UAE. He received his bachelor’s degree in history, economics and political science from Christ University, Bangalore, and his master’s degree in politics and international relations from JNU. His family hails from the Thrissur district of Kerala, India.
