Excerpt: The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy in the Eastern Mediterranean region, with a population of 11.56 million in 2024. It shares borders with Syria in the north, Iraq in the northeast, Saudi Arabia in the east and the south, and Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the west. Jordan is predominantly a land-locked country with narrow access to the Red Sea through the Gulf of Aqaba. Migrants and refugees, mainly from Palestine and Syria, constitute around 33 per cent of the country’s population. COVID-19 profoundly affected all aspects of life in Jordan. The Kingdom used the emergency provisions and deployed the military to contain the spread of the pandemic. Although the government’s containment measures saw initial success, the number of COVID-19 infections and resultant deaths increased alarmingly, straining the Kingdom’s healthcare system, society and economy. (p. 117)
